Thomas Sowell: We’re Heading For Tyranny

bamopoly Thomas Sowell: Were Heading For Tyranny

Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny?

By THOMAS SOWELL @ IBD

When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics.

Such people were a valuable addition to his political base, since they were particularly susceptible to Hitler’s rhetoric and had far less basis for questioning his assumptions or his conclusions.

“Useful idiots” was the term supposedly coined by V.I. Lenin to describe similarly unthinking supporters of his dictatorship in the Soviet Union.

Put differently, a democracy needs informed citizens if it is to thrive, or ultimately even survive.

Latest Trashing From The Left: No “Best Friends” For Kids

The paranoid delusions of the expert class

By: E. D. Kain @ Washington Examiner

The indomitable James Poulos, writing from his new perch at the excellent Ricochet blog, links to this frightening New York Times piece:

But increasingly, some educators and other professionals who work with children are asking a question that might surprise their parents: Should a child really have a best friend?

Most children naturally seek close friends. In a survey of nearly 3,000 Americans ages 8 to 24 conducted last year by Harris Interactive, 94 percent said they had at least one close friend. But the classic best-friend bond — the two special pals who share secrets and exploits, who gravitate to each other on the playground and who head out the door together every day after school — signals potential trouble for school officials intent on discouraging anything that hints of exclusivity, in part because of concerns about cliques and bullying. Napolitano: Internet Monitoring Needed to Fight Homegrown Terrorism

WASHINGTON — Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications is a civil liberties trade-off the U.S. government must make to beef up national security, the nation’s homeland security chief said Friday.

As terrorists increasingly recruit U.S. citizens, the government needs to constantly balance Americans’ civil rights and privacy with the need to keep people safe, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

But finding that balance has become more complex as homegrown terrorists have used the Internet to reach out to extremists abroad for inspiration and training. Those contacts have spurred a recent rash of U.S.-based terror plots and incidents.

Oooh … ALL Was Revealed

I asked Helen Thomas about Israel. Her answer revealed more than you think.

By David F. Nesenoff @ WaPo

On the night of May 26, I drove down to Washington from New York with my son, Adam, and his friend Daniel. We arrived at 2:30 a.m. and crashed in a hotel. A few hours later, we woke up and coaxed each other to prepare for a day at the White House. The president was hosting a Jewish heritage celebration, and we’d been able to get media credentials to cover the event. We were exhausted, but thrilled.

Federal regulators are reconsidering the rules that govern high-speed Internet connections – wading into a bitter policy dispute that could be tied up in court for years.

The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote Thursday to begin taking public comments on three different paths for regulating broadband. That includes a proposal by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, a Democrat, to define broadband access as a telecommunications service subject to “common carrier” obligations to treat all traffic equally.

Genachowski’s proposal is a response to a federal appeals court ruling that has cast doubt on the agency’s authority over broadband under its existing regulatory framework.

The Daily Caller: International protest groups take up ‘Tea Party’ flag in Moscow, Tel Aviv and the Hague

As Tea Party protests pop up in places like Moscow, Tel Aviv and the Hague, Americans may question whether the Tea Party platform can cross international and cultural borders. For activists outside the U.S., the answer is a resounding “yes.”

“I think the message of the American Revolution is global. The message of natural, unalienable rights, the message of opposition to tyrannical government — that’s not just well-known, that’s universal,” Boris Karpa, organizer of the Israeli Tea Party, told The Daily Caller in an e-mail. “As you know well, many countries have based their founding documents on the U.S. Declaration of Independence or other American documents.”

Back In The U.S.S.R. … You Don’t Know How Lucky You Are, Boys: Russian Police Seize 100,000 Anti-Vladimir Putin Books

Police seize 100,000 anti-Vladimir Putin books

Russian police seized 100,000 copies of a book critical of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that activists planned to hand out at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum.

MOSCOW – Copies of ‘Putin. The Results. 10 Years on’, written by opposition politicians Boris Nemtsov and Vladimir Milov were “intended for participants of the forum”, starting Thursday, according to Olga Kurnosova, head of the city’s branch of the opposition United Civic Front, said.

The reasons for the seizure “are not very clear”, she said.

The book, which has a total print-run of one million copies, aims to “tell the truth about the real results of the leadership of Putin and the tandem”, Mr Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister, wrote in his blog on Monday.

Winston Churchill’s Cigar Airbrushed From Iconic Photo at British WWII Museum

LONDON, ENGLAND – You can fight on the beaches, you can fight in the fields and in the streets, but if you’re Winston Churchill, the one thing you can’t do in Britain these days is chomp on a cigar.

An iconic photo of the former prime minister that sits perched atop the entrance to a World War II museum in London was airbrushed by an unknown censor, removing the wartime chief’s signature stogie from the picture.

Flashing a defiant grin, Churchill has hand fixed into his trademark “V” for victory in the photo, but the cigar he has clamped into the corner of his mouth in the original has gone mysteriously up in smoke.

chavez Sean Penn Believes This Man Should Be Thrown in Prison: Fugitive TV Tycoon Denounces Venezuelas Chavez

(Reuters) – The fugitive boss of Venezuela’s opposition Globovision television station accused socialist President Hugo Chavez on Monday of ordering his arrest to stifle his criticism of the government.

Authorities in the OPEC nation issued a warrant for Guillermo Zuloaga and raided his house on Friday, accusing him of illegally storing new vehicles last year for speculative purposes. He was not home at the time.

Zuloaga said in a telephone call to Globovision from an undisclosed location that the charges were politically motivated and he was the victim of a witch hunt.

Bob Etheridge WaPo: That Whole Rep. Bob Etheridge Thing Was Just Rough Sex With A Stranger ... or Something

WaPo: Who TMZ’d Rep. Bob Etheridge?

Last week Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.), who’s seen as a safe bet for re-election this year despite representing a somewhat conservative (Cook R+2) district, ran into two self-described students with video cameras outside of a fundraiser.

“Do you fully support the Obama agenda?” asked one of the students.

“Who are you?” asked Etheridge, grabbing one of the cameras and pointing it down — a move more typically seen from Hollywood bodyguards than congressmen. The second camera rolled as Etheridge, irritated, held the wrist of the first cameraman, then pulled the student to his side and grabbed him in a hug.

“We’re just here for a project, sir,” said one of the students.
